Get Windows 7 Start Menu In Windows 8

September 16, 2011

With advancements taking place day by day in geek world, most of us might have installed WINDOWS 8 by now on our systems. There is much to like about WINDOWS 8 including the new start menu, but still there must be few of us who would still prefer Windows Vista or Windows 7 because of their search box feature that made the functioning easy and so far this feature is not seen in Windows 8,  or at least it has for now in the developer build, but getting it back isn’t all that hard.

Those want to change the Windows 8 start menu back to the Windows 7 version, here is the way how to do it :

  1. Launch the registry editor (win+r > regedit >enter)
  2. Drill down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
  3. Double-click on RPEnabled
  4. Change the value from 1 to  (zero)
  5. Tap enter or click OK

By following the above procedure, one would get back to the Windows 7 version immediately – just tap the Windows key on your keyboard twice to try it out (the first press will slide the Metro start screen back into view).

Once the required changes have been made and you log in, you will no longer face the trademark Windows 8 start screen. There will be a new interface that looks alike your existing Windows 7  desktop. The only real difference being the squared-off window borders on your applications.
